Cherokee language coming to iOS in 2011.

Cherokee Chief Chad Smith contacted Apple about the addition of the Cherokee language to iOS three years ago and the update should now be coming in 2011.

Steve and his team have been working with Cherokee tribe members to include the ancient Cherokee language as an option on iOS devices, apparently “in an effort to appeal to younger tribe members who also want to keep up with their heritage.”

Tribe members (about 10,000 of which are speakers of Cherokee) already use Apple computers with the unique characters of the two centuries old language.

Currently iOS devices have support for 50 international languages, but none are Native American. But in Apple’s ruthless globalisation I’m sure we’ll be seeing more and more international languages added to iOS in times to come. We don’t want people to miss out on the wonder of the world that is the iPad do we?
